COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY
Since moving to Evansville in the summer of 2023, I have already been exposed to an extremely diverse population. After having a history of white, male leadership for over 200 years, the 2023 mayoral race changed everything for the city. Stephanie Terry was elected as the first female and first African-American mayor of Evansville. The WPSR News Team had the immense privilege and honor of interviewing her a week after her inauguration on January 8th, 2024.
One of my favorite aspects of CPTV News QuickCUT was getting the opportunity to showcase the large variety of clubs, sports teams, and organizations that CPHS students were a part of. Of course, every week we had to report about the football, basketball, or baseball team, but we also had segments showing off the robotics team, theatre department, dance team, and so much more. Below I have placed three QuickCUT segments that highlight the diverse groups that do not receive as much recognition for their incredible work.
CPHS VARSITY DANCE TEAM NATIONALS
AIRED FEBRUARY 16TH, 2023
This package highlights the CPHS Varsity Dance Team as they won their first UDA National Championship in Small Varsity High-Kick. As a dancer, I know these dancers practice incredibly hard every season from May until March, yet they do not always receive praise for it. I produced this package and conducted the interview with dancer, Kalliopi Sakaleros. This segment is anchored by CPHS Junior, Kailey Palomo.
CPHS THEATRE DEPT. PUFFS PLAY
AIRED NOVEMBER 17TH, 2022
As a three-year member of the CPHS Theatre Department, I always enjoyed creating a QuickCUT segment regarding my "neck of the woods" at CPHS. I produced this package and conducted the interview with director, Jerome Flewelling. This segment is anchored by CPHS Alumni, Chris Gloff.
CPHS VEX ROBOTICS
AIRED APRIL 13TH, 2023
Another team at CPHS that deserves more recognition is the national award winning VEX Robotics Team. Back in April, this team qualified for the 2023 VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas, Texas. This package was produced by CPHS Alumni, Emily Dill, and I served as the on-camera anchor.
Something unique about the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation is the many innovative model programs they offer for their high school students. The Southern Indiana Career & Technical Center (SICTC) is one of them along with the Academy of Science & Medicine (ASM). I feel so lucky to now live in a city that encourages its students to follow their dreams by providing satellite programs for so many different career paths. At my internship with WNIN, I was assigned to produce a segment about this diverse program the EVSC offers. I wrote the script, organized the interview, and voiced the piece. It aired on the station on February 8th, 2024.
