SOCIAL MEDIA WORK

CPTV News QuickCUT was designed before I was in high school during the 2019-2020 school year. The CPTV class discussed how they got their news from social media outlets, like Snapchat, Twitter, etc. Before they went into quarantine, they created a design and outline for the show. This new form of CPTV News appealed more to the teenage eye, and CPHS students watched it every week during resource period. My classmates were captivated by this show, and they were receiving news in a quick, modern way. The first episode aired on May 13th, 2021 on Snapchat. I have placed the 2023 National Student Production Award winning episode of CPTV QuickCUT. I served as anchor, and I produced the swim team segment.

With the steadfast popularity of social media such as Instagram, Facebook, X (Twitter), and TikTok, it is so important for journalists to "know their audience." In my case, I utilize multiple social media platforms daily to reach my audience of high school students. At 90.7 WPSR, we post everyday on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok to keep students in the know of events happening in and around SICTC and the Tri-State area. Check out the accounts below to view the social media content created by my classmates and myself.

During my junior year in my CPTV class, my instructor, Mr. Gloff, emphasized the importance of consistency as a journalist. He challenged my other classmates and I to post a short news story on Twitter every day. I started posting about Crown Point High School sports daily, and I eventually began tweeting shorts news stories. My tweets began receiving attention from coaches, administrators, teachers, and parents all throughout the city and school corporation. Whether it was a hard news story, a school event, or shouting-out a sports team or a club, I maintained consistent throughout all of second semester posting multiple times per week on Twitter (now called X).

At the end of every CPTV QuickCUT episode, the anchor would sign off by promoting our social media accounts and websites. This is significant because we want our viewers to know that our program doesn't only report for QuickCUT episodes. We reported daily on TheDogRadio.com at the bottom of every hour, on Twitter @CrownTMedia, and on our website CrownTownMedia.com.

As the senior staff of 90.7 WPSR, one of our weekly job rotations is editing and touching-up our website, wpsrhd.com. We upload the student blogs and podcasts and local news. This year we created a new look for the website that is more engaging for the viewer and represents all the aspects of our program. This website has been submitted to the 2024 IASB Competition in the Student Media Website category.
